El Cortez Opens New Hotel

When Las Vegans think downtown Las Vegas, they may think "old school" -- dingy rooms and maybe a dreary decor. Thursday night, downtown's first resort is the first to go modern.
The El Cortez arrived here in 1941. It was the first big hotel downtown. Over the last few years, the casino has been slowly renovated.
The newest piece of the El Cortez, located across the street from the main casino, won't need luck to be a hit. The Cabana Suites bring slick and sassy from the floors to the ceiling.
“We had this old hotel called the Ogden House that was built in the early ‘70s, and it was sort of dilapidated,” said El Cortez owner Jackie Epstein. “So what we did is we ripped everything out of it … new plumbing, new electrical, everything is new."
In all 64 brand new rooms with everything you'd want in hotel and maybe a little more, including big beds, designer sinks, HDTV and even a dock for your iPod.
“What we're going for is something completely new, something unlike anything in Las Vegas. It's a boutique hotel, something sheik, something for style-minded people who can appreciate a good deal,” said project coordinator Alex Epstein.
“It's a real surprise to see this from the El Cortez. I've seen some of the hipper rooms in town and on the Strip, and The Palms and Hard Rock and the new things going on, and this is on par with them. It really is,” said Eric Gladstone, of Vegas Magazine.
The Cabana Suites is another piece of the city's redevelopment plan, and the stay is inexpensive, with rooms starting at $40 a night.
The total cost of the renovation was around $7 million. The El Cortez plans on adding a pool to the Cabana Suites in the near future. _________________ . |

I beg to differ on that comment. The rooms at the Golden Gate have quite a bit of a modern touch. As do the Gold Club rooms at the Golden Nugget, and so do the renovated rooms at the Cal and Fremont. While the Cabana Suites may be angling towards Mid-Century Modern with a Miami twist, they're not the only ones with an eye towards modernist decor. The other properties are a more contemporary Modern (Think something from the pages of Dwell), with a bit of Scandinavian Modern thrown in as well. _________________
